ABOUT SOUTH LAKE MASTERS
South Lake Masters is the new club name for the adult swimming club based at South Lake Leisure Centre in Craigavon. The club, previously known as Lurgan Masters, has continued to grow in the last few years and is now the largest masters swimming club in Northern Ireland. It has a long and distinguished history...
In 1997 two intrepid Lurgan swimmers, Turlough O’Hagan and Francie McAlinden, decided to enter themselves into the Ulster Masters Championships at the Grove Baths in Belfast.
They called themselves ‘The Alcatraz Swim Team’ and although they had limited success at that event ''a club was well and truly born''...
25 years on and more than the name has changed!
What started as a one hour session needing just one lane per week has grown into a full pool of like-minded people training up to four times a week. The club now caters for adults of all ages (18+) interested in competing or simply swimming for the many health benefits. Depending on your ability and goals your experience can be as casual or focussed as you want. Our membership has now grown to over 80 swimmers from all walks of life who train for competitive masters’ galas, open water swimming events, triathlons/ironman events, or just for fun and fitness.
“Nothing is impossible. With so many people saying it couldn’t be done, all it takes is an imagination.”
